Sitge's Film Festival is one of the most important in Spain and Europe, but if we speak of the fantastic genre and terror genre, we are without a doubt speaking of the most important film festival in the world for this type of film. It is celebrated every year, generally in October. The Fantastic Film Festival in Sitges is today a worldwide reference of it's genre. The first edition toodk place in the year 1968, the year that was presented as a Week of Fantastic Film and Terror. Almost 40 years later, this small festival gets worldwide attention.
Directors, actors, producers, of such importance as Quentin Tarantino, Jodie Foster, Ralph Fiennes, Cameron Diaz, Viggo Mortensen, Dino de Laurentii, Tony Curtis, David Cronenberg, John Woo, Park Chan-wook, Johnnie To, Paul Naschy, Ray Liotta, Jon Voight, Sam Raimi, Roger Corman, Mira Sorvino, Santiago Segura, Narciso Ibáñez Serrador, Guillermo del Toro, Álex de la Iglesia, Aitana Sánchez Gijón, Anthony Hopkins...have come to Sitges in the past years.
This festival survives thanks to the public help of catalonian institutions, as well as private help from certain companies related to the audiovisual sector.
